Lady Musgrave Island
Lady Musgrave Island and Lagoon is a true coral cay situated only 32 nautical miles from the town of 1770. Lady Musgrave National Park is a tropical paradise abundant in pisonia forests and bird life. The island is set on 3000 acres of the living reef in the deepwater coral lagoon and the "Spirit of 1770" moors in the calm waters if the lagoon only 300 metres from the island. This provides a protected haven for all age groups to explore the wonders of a living reef eco-system and the colourful variety of marine life-all in one great day.
Lady Musgrave Coral Cay is 14ha, with a 1292ha-surrounding reef - one third being the Lagoon. It was first charted in 1820, listed as a National Park in 1939 and a Marine Park in 1967. It was named after the wife of the Governor of Queensland (1883-88) - Jeanie Lucinda Musgrave whom was renowned for her lavish tea parties at Government House.
The seabirds on the island are spectacular: Wedge Tailed Shearwaters, Noddies, Boobies & Terns. The seabirds nest in & under the Pisonia forest and nesting season is October to December. Turtles nest October to February.
There are a large variety of Coral and Marine life in the area: Blue Spotted Rays, Manta Rays, Seahorses, Whales in season and Turtles all year round.
